In support of the National Library Week (NLW) 2010 on the theme Communities thrive @ libraries, the Ecumenical Centre for Research, Education & Advocacy (ECREA) celebrated the event by donating some of ECREA’s publications to schools and organisations around and along Ratu Sukuna Road. The Resource Centre staff also hosted a morning tea with their staff, volunteers, and a representative from the Suva City Council. In addition, each staff members and volunteers were encouraged to choose a publication produced by ECREA to read, and to do a five minute book review during their morning tea session together. The aim of this exercise was to encourage each staff members to learn about and acknowledge the work committed and produced by ECREA , for example, racial discrimination, globalisation, culture, identity and youth, faith and peace building. Our resource centre aims to facilitate the research needs of ECREA and to provide a comprehensive library and information service to staff, academic and the general public. Fiji, at the cross-roads of engaging in economic development, trade talks and partnership, and infrastructure in the urban and rural sectors, also experience the rise of inequality, and exclusion amongst the population. As a social justice organisation, ECREA continues to work on issues, strengthen our network, and collect information such a poverty alleviation, community development, ecumenism, peace building and conflict transformation, intercultural awareness among others. The availability of information and resources for learning through libraries plays a pivotal role in understanding the deep seated issues we need as a nation to resolve. The accessibility of such information will be crucial in Fiji’s social and economic development and growth.
